Don't Quit Now!
As mentioned in previous blogs, the staff at The Wellness Center is constantly updating the wall located behind the weightlifting equipment. I have personally found that if I am struggling to come up with new work out ideas, this wall does a great job in demonstrating different ways to go about getting toned and tightened. Recently, there has been a list added to the wall that shows over a hundred different ways of how to make better food choices each day. We all know that exercise and eating right are the key to physical enrichment. Therefore, this list can assist those who may need to ‘tweak’ their eating styles.
Just because the school year is coming to a close does not mean that students have to stop making trips to The Wellness Center. In fact, students who have a CSS I.D. are allowed to come and visit The Wellness Center during the summer free of charge. If you know of anyone who is looking to get a gym membership, suggest to them the idea of becoming a member at The Wellness Center. That way, not only will they become more fit, you too will have that extra motivation to work out with him/her.
What else?
Jack is our food operations manager here at the college. He oversees GDR, Storms Den and catering. On the program's website(http://www2.css.edu/depts/foodserv/cookingwithjack/tips.html), there is a large list of recipes and instructions for students to eat healthy. His classes are free to attend, although you will want to sign up early because the kitchen is only so big. His schedule for this year is already over, but you can always grab recipes and fun facts on the website.
So remember to eat healthy, exercise a lot, and enjoy the results. The Wellness Center offers a variety of options and don't forget to add this blog to your favorites, in case you want to stay up to date on what's happening in the Center. As always, I hope to see you at the Center.

Mental Health and The Wellness Center
Physical activity is a great stress reliever and can help in clearing one’s head when life may seem too much to handle. By being able to run, lift weights, or stretch (through yoga), this allows individuals the chance to get away from life’s pressures or stresses if only for awhile. Exercise is an excellent ‘natural drug’ that releases endorphins making a person feel better. If you are finding yourself feeling uneasy or stressed, I suggest taking a trip to The Wellness Center.
If you are not interested in a ‘sweat session’ to help maintain your stress level, there are many displays and magazines in The Wellness Center that give great descriptions of different yoga poses known for relieving stress. I personally have found that stretching along with deep breathing can do a great job of clearing my mind and reducing stress. Remember to keep strong during these times and know that you have the resources to stay healthy both physically and mentally.
Way to Go Women's Tennis!!
The tennis team had a very unfortunate beginning record of 2-7 through March 15. After losing 3 out of 4 games on their spring break tournament in Orlando, the ladies of the tennis team have pulled 5 great wins in a row. They have defeated all of their opponents by incredible feats, beating Bethany Lutheran, Bemidji State, and Northwestern College with a 9-0 meet score and Saint Mary's and Martin Luther with a score of 8-1. All of their players have matured and will continue to be competitive for the rest of the season.
Leading the way in the singles matches are Paula Beckermann, Katie Motley, and Katrina Sacchetti. These players have won at least 8 games per player this year. These successes at singles coupled with the doubles teams of Jessica Rich/Lindsey Shoden and Paula Beckermann/Katie Motely have given the CSS women's tennis team a 3-0 UMAC record and an overall record of 7-8. Well, I hope to see more of you at the women's last home game on April 29 at noon in the Wellness Center. I hope to see you there to support this great tennis team and to let the ladies know that we appreciate how well they have improved. As always, I hope to see you in the Center.

Saints Baseball
Starting off the year 2-0 with two wins over Bethel College, the Saints then lost their next 3 games to national powers UW-Stevens Point, St. Thomas and Penn State-Behrend respectively. Their last loss to Behrend came in the first game of a nine game stretch of games played in Florida over Spring Break. Rebounding after losing their opening game of the trip, the Saints won the last 8 games of their trip, most coming in convincing fashion, including a 33-3 rout of Cazenovia College out of New York.
Since returning from Florida, games have been hard to come by due to weather conditions, with several games getting postponed. The Saints home opener, scheduled for today, has been pushed back due to the field conditions. In the few games the Saints have been able to play, they have remained on their hot streak. They have continued their dominance of UMAC opponents, including a 24-3 victory over UM-Morris.
Leading the Saints on their early season run has been junior Blake Eller who is hitting .451, with 3 home runs, and 33 runs batted in. Not far behind him are seniors Brandon Schwartz and Chad Weis who are both hitting over .400 on the season. Leading the Saints on the mound has been senior Mark Moriarty with a 5-1 record and era of 2.48. A host of Saints pitchers are at 2-0, with the teams combined era an impressive 2.78.
Be sure to get out and support the Saints whenever their home opener actually happens. It is now scheduled to be this weekend, Friday at 3:00 and Saturday at 12:00 and 2:00 at Wade Stadium here in Duluth. The Saints will be taking on UMAC opponent Crown College, so get out their and support your team.

Outdoor Pursuit!!!
So what activities are offered through Outdoor Pursuit? Well, they offer winter camping, sea kayaking, sledding, alpine skiing, hiking, and many more which can be found on their website (http://www.css.edu/x3081.xml). Many of the activities have minimal fees, if any. Sea kayaking and rock climbing are already scheduled for the spring and more activities will be added. Make sure to check the websites listed above for the latest on each activity. With Outdoor Pursuit, you can continue to exercise and train for these outstanding activities that are offered. As always, I hope to see you at the Wellness Center.
Using Your Resources
Upon entering the Wellness Center, there is a wall in which the staff has attached numerous pictures and diagrams that show different types of toning exercises members can practice. The exercises included on the wall not only include pictures showing members how to do them, there are also step-by-step instructions as to how to perform them as well. The way the staff has compiled the information, makes it easy to get a good toning workout (a work out that one may not have been knowledgeable about getting).
Along with the different types of toning exercises, there is also a list of foods included on the wall. Students may be making mistakes in their fitness goals based on the different foods they are consuming. It is important to eat foods that do not make one tired or sluggish because not only will this affect one’s exercise routine, it could also have negative affects on a student’s academic career. The staff at the Wellness Center is aware of the importance of eating nutritious food, which is why they have included a list of the ‘best foods to eat’. If an individual is making sure to eat well, it will be easier to meet the physical demands an individual faces when working out.
Next time you are in the Wellness Center take a look at the wall (located behind the weight lifting equipment) and become familiar with the information provided. The staff at the Wellness Center is doing a great job providing its members with the tools they need to be the most successful in their fitness goals. As long as the tools are there make sure to take advantage of them!
Volleyball Spring Practice
Last season, the Saints finished strong, going 20-7 and wrapping up their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference title since 1999. Even though they only had one senior in LeAnn Berscheit, the Saints, battled through injuries last year to have a very successful season. Their loan senior will be missed next fall, but the experience the underclassmen gained last year should lead to another winning season. With the returning players and hopefully a recruiting class that will be able to step in and play right away, Head Coach Dana Moore is very optimisitic for the upcoming season.

Spring Intramurals!
Spring Intramurals are all co-rec, meaning that males and females can play on the same team. All faculty, staff and students are eligible to participate. However, some restrictions are applied to specific events. I will explain these restrictions later when I talk about each event. Each player also needs a CSS ID to sign in before each game.
If you couldn’t find a team to join, or not sure if you wanted to play all season, the option of becoming a free agent was possible. A free agent is a single player that can be picked up by a team. If there are enough free agents to form a team, an additional independent team will be formed. This is a great opportunity to meet new friends while enjoying Intramurals in the Wellness Center!
There are three leagues this spring including co-rec volleyball, co-rec badminton, and co-rec wiffleball. Co-rec volleyball teams are made up of six players, playing on Monday and Wednesday night. There is a two intercollegiate volleyball player limit per team to ensure fair play. On Tuesday nights in the Wellness Center field house, co-rec badminton will be filling the courts. Doubles teams of any combination are allowed, but no more than one varsity tennis player is allowed on each team. Co-Rec wiffleball will be played on Thursdays in the Wellness Center field house also. Each team must have a minimum of 4 women, again to ensure fair play. There can be no more than two softball or baseball players on each team.
Special Intramural Events including a co-rec trench tournament, a basketball extravaganza, and a co-rec indoor soccer tournament will be played later this spring. Registration for the soccer tournament is still open, so register now. This registration ends April 8th, so get your friends together and form a team. After you register, go to the Wellness Center to practice and have a great time!

Shape Up CSS!
When an individual starts the Shape Up program, they are paired with a mentor that will assist them in achieving their fitness goals. A mentor is provided to individuals in order to discuss the safest and healthiest ways to achieve their realistic goals. There is also discussion about the individual’s current eating habits and what interests they have in different fitness activities.
The reason why this program is so positive is because the mentors of the Shape Up program are not drill sergeants, they are resources. Instead of dragging people on exercise machines and yelling at them to “push it” for twenty more minutes, the mentors simply give the individuals the knowledge they need to get started and continue with their program on their own. To make sure the individual does not feel uncomfortable, the mentor does not watch while they workout. Rather, the mentor is there to explain how the equipment works and to assist the individual when they feel they need to change up their exercise routine.
If you’re that person who always intends on working out and eating right but just doesn’t know how, this is the program for you. There is no pressure or obligation, just information and advice to help get you started. Stop in to the Wellness Center today to talk to a mentor about becoming a better you.
The Women's Tennis Team
The team has only three seniors (Lindsey Shoden, Jess Rich, Heidi Johnson), and one junior (Casey Ruberto), which allows the remaining nine players room to improve and strengthen their skills. They will be able to use the knowledge of the seniors and junior in order to become even more successful in coming years.
Wells Patten is also the coach for the women's tennis team and has a lot of experience from his coaching days over at University of Minnesota-Duluth. While coaching at UMD, he led them to their first NSIC conference championship. He has proven himself a leader and we can only look for more success this year.
So, how is the team doing? Well, they have only won one complete match up and have given great effort in the four losses. Each loss has been close and I'm sure as the season progresses, we can see the W's continue to increase. In the last match up, Jess Rich and Paula Beckerman both won their singles matches, while two of the three doubles teams won their matches. However, with the wins they were barely defeated 4-3 in the match play.
The women won't be back at the Wellness Center until after spring break. They will be playing Bemidji State and Bethany Lutheran on March 24. So there is no excuse to not cheer on the women's tennis team this year. So I hope to see you all working out or cheering for one of the great athletic programs we have at the Wellness Center, and don't forget to check back soon for more updates.

Men's Tennis
This year the men’s tennis team consists of two seniors, four juniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen. This year’s freshmen are Dillon Sterle from Hibbing, Minnesota, and Nemanja Radosevic from Serbia. These two freshmen should make a great addition to the team and compliment the returning players well.
The team is led by head coach Wills Patten. This will be coach Patten’s tenth season as the Saint’s head coach. Coach Patten was a tennis champion in both singles and doubles during his college career. He is a professional tennis instructor and boasts a master’s degree in Athletic Administration. Coach Patten is actively involved in tennis throughout Minnesota, and the college is proud to have a Duluth, Minnesota native as their head tennis coach.
Last season, the team’s overall record was 12-14, but the team boasted a 8-0 record in conference play. So far this season the team boasts only two wins along with six losses. The team is hoping to gain some wins on their trip to Orlando, Florida over spring break. The team recently defeated Ripon College in Houghton, Michigan. Many Saints got their first wins in this game including Derek Johnson, Ryan Anthony, Scott Hawley, Namanja Radosevic, Peter Sparby, and Alex Rogers.
If you are interested in watching the team play, the next home game is on March 24th against Bethany Lutheran College here to face the Saints. You can check out their schedule by checking the St. Scholastica web site at www.css.edu.
Be sure to stop by and watch the men’s tennis team in the Wellness Center this season before or after working out, or just for something to do on a Saturday morning. Hope to see you there!

Saints Baseball
The Saints have been practicing inside the wellness center for almost a month now, waiting to take the playing field. It isn't exactly ideal baseball conditions inside the wellness center, but atleast they have somewhere to practice. Before the opening of the wellness center, the Saints had to have their early season practices inside the Reif Gymnasium next door. The wellness center gives them much more space and a better playing surface to get prepared for the upcoming season.
The wait for the season to start isn't much longer. The Saints open up tomorrow, February 28th, at the Metrodome in Minneapolis against Bethel College. Junior outfielder/pitcher Blake Eller says, " they (Bethel) should provide a good test for us, they were picked 3rd or 4th in the MIAC (Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), we'll be ready to go though." The Saints return to the Metrodome on March 5th when they will play Wisconsin-Stevens Point and St. Thomas. Head Coach John Baggs said in a preseason interview, "we will know a lot more about our NCAA chances on March 6th," referring to their chances of making the NCAA tournament.
The Saints look to be headed for another successful year, so try and make it out to Wade Stadium and see a game as soon as the snow melts. The home opener is scheduled for April 17th against Northland College.

Always Improving...
The Wellness Center has added a link to their website called Shape Up. On this link individuals have the opportunity to view video clips (showing various toning exercises), set personal fitness goals, become better educated on the benefits of exercise, learn different medical terms and conditions, and more. By educating people on how and why to exercise, this could help in more individuals reaching their fitness goals.
The topic of cold and flu season is never a positive one. The Wellness Center is taking strides to better protect its members from contracting viruses while exercising. The center has added hand sanitizer dispensers next to each set of work out machines. The hand sanitizer is allowing individuals the chance to stay clean as well as healthy. Along with hand sanitizer, the staff of the Wellness Center has also posted signs asking that each individual clean off their machine after each use. By addressing and becoming aware of germs, members of the Wellness Center can continue to improve and maintain their health.
Stay tuned for future blogs addressing improvements and additions to the Wellness Center here at CSS.
Final Basketball Games of the Year
The Saints women squad fell 65-58 Friday, in what was a close game the entire way, with Morris finally able to pull away in the final minute. Sophomore Erin Niles led CSS in scoring with 16 points. Saturday four Saints seniors, Jessie Stenberg, Amanda Johnson, Kim Huschle, and Heather Sarahlampi play the final home games of their careers. The night, however, was spoiled due to 43 points from Callie Antonsen of Presentation. She almost single handedly beat the Saints as they fell 62-52.
The men had much better luck this weekend. Friday night CSS won 91-81 in game in which they never trailed. The Saints offense was tough to stop behind 33 points from Derek Johnson and 29 points from Will Maupins, their two senior captains. Saturday night Johnson and Maupins, along with fellow senior, Joe Prettner, beat Presentation 72-59 in their final game in the Reif. The Saints jumped out to an early lead and never let go of it. They were led by Kyle Allen with 16 points and Maupins added 15 points. The victory assured the Saints of a place in the conference tournament this upcoming weekend in Minneapolis, MN.

What's Inside
Once inside the Wellness Center, you can head to the new locker rooms to get your clean shoes on, changed, and ready to enjoy the Wellness Center. From here, you have many options to enjoy your time. You can start by going to the free weight room to lift some weights, or to the large aerobics room for your workout. If you are a walker or runner, there two indoor tracks available for use. There is a lower 6 lane track for the more serious runner and an upper track for recreational runners and walkers.
If you are looking to get on a machine for a workout, head to the cardio fitness area. This area boasts the most up to date machines including treadmills, bikes, elliptical machines, step machines, and more!
If weightlifting or cardiovascular machines aren’t your idea of fun, the Wellness Center has many other options for fitness. Four basketball, volleyball or tennis courts are available downstairs for use. These courts are used for intramurals, and can be reserved by calling the Wellness Center. Another option for fitness is the 40 foot climbing wall. The wall is great for beginners or experts, with trained climbers there to guide you on your climb.
If you are looking to work out with a group, the Wellness Center hosts many classes in the aerobics room. Classes available this semester include Aerobics, many types of Yoga, Pilates, Ti Chi, Kickboxing, and more! To sign up for a class, check out the CSS website, or call the Wellness Center for more information.
If you are not looking to utilize the Wellness Center for personal fitness, you can head over to the Reif Gymnasium to watch the men and women’s basketball games, or women’s volleyball games. You can also say in the Wellness Center to watch men and women’s tennis or indoor track.
The Wellness Center has many ways for you to get in shape, and stay fit. Get your clean shoes, and go enjoy all the Wellness Center has to offer!
What is the Wellness Center?
The Wellness Center was created to increase the awareness of healthy living to the College of St. Scholastica. The College had the Reif Gymnasium before the Wellness Center was created for school sporting events, however, they did not have a place for the students to enjoy and exercise. This is why the Wellness Center was created.
"The 63,000-square-foot Wellness Center is a field house complex featuring an indoor six-lane 200-meter running track, four multipurpose courts, a free weight room, an aerobic studio, a cardiovascular fitness mezzanine overlooking the track, a 40 foot climbing wall with a bouldering field, and new locker rooms." (http://www.css.edu/x2863.xml)
As you can see the Wellness Center has a lot to offer you as student, faculty member, or other member of the St. Scholastica community.
The Wellness Center is not open to the general public; however there are some guidelines to who may use the facilities. It is open to all students, staff, faculty, Benedictine Sisters and alumni. There are membership fees for those who are not currently a student or staff member. The guidelines for the membership prices can be found at the following website, http://www.css.edu/x2863.xml. If you decide to visit someone who is a St. Scholastica member, you will only have to pay $5; pretty inexpensive for a trial at the Wellness Center.
The folks at the Wellness Center have tried to keep the facility open as long as possible in order to keep up with the demanding schedules associated with college and your careers. The following link will keep you updated with the schedule (http://www.css.edu/x15007.xml); watch for updates on the spring break schedule. Not all of the activities offered are accessible everyday, so make sure to check with our blog often to keep updated. Patricia will be explaining more about the activities offered and will inform you about what to expect at the Wellness Center. As always, hope to see you at the Center.

What's Up?
I originally wanted to be a marine biologist but decided that it just isn't worth it. I studied in Hawaii for a year so it was definitely not an easy choice to come back to Duluth. Surfing is a lot harder than it looks. I have always been interested in business and I'll be graduating in the fall with a management major and no minor, different from my other group members. I just like the variety that business has to offer. I am also currently working at Menards in the hardware department here in Duluth, so if you have any questions about tools or nails, I can probably answer them for you. It continues to be a good work experience while in school.
I have a few hobbies that I like. I love to go kayaking, especially when its through small rivers or tributaries because you really get an adrenaline rush finding those small rapids. I also like playing basketball or football. I also try to go fishing and hiking as much as possible, just about anything outdoors is awesome. I try to get to the Wellness Center as often as possible and encourage everyone to at least try it out. So hopefully you will check back often to keep yourself updated with the activities that are happening at the Wellness Center.
Introducing....
I currently live on campus in the Cedar apartments. My plan is to graduate in May of 2008 with a major in both management and economics as well as a minor in finance. I decided to look to the ‘business world’ for my future career because I enjoy the constant change it involves.
When I am not attending school and studying, I keep busy enjoying life. Whether it be working, spending time with loved ones, or staying a loyal and devoted fan of the television show Grey’s Anatomy, there is always an opportunity to laugh. I make as much time as possible to visit my extended family in California (the sun on the west coast is amazing). I also have a slight addiction to designer handbags, high heels, and oversized sunglasses.
About three or four times a week I go to the wellness center. I usually workout at night when it is slow, that way, I don’t have to wait to get on a machine. There is quite a variety of exercise equipment at the wellness center so whether you like cardio or strength training, the wellness center has you covered. In future blog postings we will be discussing changes of the wellness center as well as new developments, different exercise classes, and much more!
Allow me to introduce myself
I am currently a junior Management major and finance minor. I'm from Two Harbors, MN, which is about 20 miles up the shore, so am I very familiar with the Duluth area. I now live here in Duluth, just off of campus. When I'm not in school, I work construction, building and remodeling homes.
At some point in my life I've played just about every sport you could think of. In high school, I played basketball, soccer, football, and golf. I played two years of basketball here at CSS as well. I'm a pretty active person, so if you're in the Wellness Center, you very well may see me. If not, keep checking out our blog and we'll be sure to let you know what's going on.

Welcome!
I am Patricia, most people call me Trisha. I grew up in the small town of Soudan, Minnesota. I am currently a second year junior at CSS. I am a management major with a minor in finance. I hope to be graduating next spring.
In high school, I played volleyball, basketball, and softball. I have a brother who plays football, basketball, and baseball. As you can tell, I am well acquainted with sports. I decided not to play any sports competitively in college, but I do play intramural volleyball. I enjoy watching and playing sports, so this blog will be fun for me to bring everyone the latest on sports events and news in the Wellness Center.
Some other things I enjoy doing are rollerblading, waterskiing, rock climbing and walking. I look forward to keeping everyone informed on things happening in the Wellness Center. Check back for updates!
