Hey everyone, have you heard of Outdoor Pursuit? I'm sure that many of you think that it's a club or organization at the college, but it's really a service that is offered. Outdoor Pursuit was created so that students and faculty can enjoy and learn more about nature and the Duluth area ( http://www.css.edu/x3078.xml). The service is advised by Michael Odberg and the CSS chapter of Outdoor Pursuit, called Northern Explorers. They "go on outdoor outings, develop leadership skills, bring the outdoors to area youth, build lifelong outdoor skills, and provide outdoor opportunities for the entire CSS community" (http://www.css.edu/x3078.xml).
So what activities are offered through Outdoor Pursuit? Well, they offer winter camping, sea kayaking, sledding, alpine skiing, hiking, and many more which can be found on their website (http://www.css.edu/x3081.xml). Many of the activities have minimal fees, if any. Sea kayaking and rock climbing are already scheduled for the spring and more activities will be added. Make sure to check the websites listed above for the latest on each activity. With Outdoor Pursuit, you can continue to exercise and train for these outstanding activities that are offered. As always, I hope to see you at the Wellness Center.

Using Your Resources
The staff at the Wellness Center have proved time and time again that they go above and beyond what is expected of a fitness center. Not only are the staff members friendly and personable (swiping your card with a smile upon your arrival to the gym), they also make it a point to ensure that members have the best possible work out experience. If you are relatively new to the Wellness Center, there are a few resources that the staff has added to better serve and inform their members.
Upon entering the Wellness Center, there is a wall in which the staff has attached numerous pictures and diagrams that show different types of toning exercises members can practice. The exercises included on the wall not only include pictures showing members how to do them, there are also step-by-step instructions as to how to perform them as well. The way the staff has compiled the information, makes it easy to get a good toning workout (a work out that one may not have been knowledgeable about getting).
Along with the different types of toning exercises, there is also a list of foods included on the wall. Students may be making mistakes in their fitness goals based on the different foods they are consuming. It is important to eat foods that do not make one tired or sluggish because not only will this affect one’s exercise routine, it could also have negative affects on a student’s academic career. The staff at the Wellness Center is aware of the importance of eating nutritious food, which is why they have included a list of the ‘best foods to eat’. If an individual is making sure to eat well, it will be easier to meet the physical demands an individual faces when working out.
Next time you are in the Wellness Center take a look at the wall (located behind the weight lifting equipment) and become familiar with the information provided. The staff at the Wellness Center is doing a great job providing its members with the tools they need to be the most successful in their fitness goals. As long as the tools are there make sure to take advantage of them!

Volleyball Spring Practice
Since returning from spring break, the College of St. Scholoastica's volleyball team has begun their spring training in the Reif Gymnasium. In order to prepare for the fall season, the Saints work on their skills and conditioning, so they come into the season in prime shape. Practicing for up to 2 hours a day, 5 days a week should accomplish just that for the Saints.
Last season, the Saints finished strong, going 20-7 and wrapping up their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference title since 1999. Even though they only had one senior in LeAnn Berscheit, the Saints, battled through injuries last year to have a very successful season. Their loan senior will be missed next fall, but the experience the underclassmen gained last year should lead to another winning season. With the returning players and hopefully a recruiting class that will be able to step in and play right away, Head Coach Dana Moore is very optimisitic for the upcoming season.

Spring Intramurals!
Hello again everyone! I hope you all remembered to sign up for Spring Intramurals because as of now, registration is closed as of March 18th.
Spring Intramurals are all co-rec, meaning that males and females can play on the same team. All faculty, staff and students are eligible to participate. However, some restrictions are applied to specific events. I will explain these restrictions later when I talk about each event. Each player also needs a CSS ID to sign in before each game.
If you couldn’t find a team to join, or not sure if you wanted to play all season, the option of becoming a free agent was possible. A free agent is a single player that can be picked up by a team. If there are enough free agents to form a team, an additional independent team will be formed. This is a great opportunity to meet new friends while enjoying Intramurals in the Wellness Center!
There are three leagues this spring including co-rec volleyball, co-rec badminton, and co-rec wiffleball. Co-rec volleyball teams are made up of six players, playing on Monday and Wednesday night. There is a two intercollegiate volleyball player limit per team to ensure fair play. On Tuesday nights in the Wellness Center field house, co-rec badminton will be filling the courts. Doubles teams of any combination are allowed, but no more than one varsity tennis player is allowed on each team. Co-Rec wiffleball will be played on Thursdays in the Wellness Center field house also. Each team must have a minimum of 4 women, again to ensure fair play. There can be no more than two softball or baseball players on each team.
Special Intramural Events including a co-rec trench tournament, a basketball extravaganza, and a co-rec indoor soccer tournament will be played later this spring. Registration for the soccer tournament is still open, so register now. This registration ends April 8th, so get your friends together and form a team. After you register, go to the Wellness Center to practice and have a great time!

Shape Up CSS!
Hello again! In my last blog I mentioned the Shape Up program that is offered at the Wellness Center. After becoming more familiar with this program, I have come to realize just how much it has to offer. Shape Up or Shaping Healthy Attitudes towards Personal Exercise, is a mentoring program that was developed to help individuals succeed with their diet and exercise goals.
When an individual starts the Shape Up program, they are paired with a mentor that will assist them in achieving their fitness goals. A mentor is provided to individuals in order to discuss the safest and healthiest ways to achieve their realistic goals. There is also discussion about the individual’s current eating habits and what interests they have in different fitness activities.
The reason why this program is so positive is because the mentors of the Shape Up program are not drill sergeants, they are resources. Instead of dragging people on exercise machines and yelling at them to “push it” for twenty more minutes, the mentors simply give the individuals the knowledge they need to get started and continue with their program on their own. To make sure the individual does not feel uncomfortable, the mentor does not watch while they workout. Rather, the mentor is there to explain how the equipment works and to assist the individual when they feel they need to change up their exercise routine.
If you’re that person who always intends on working out and eating right but just doesn’t know how, this is the program for you. There is no pressure or obligation, just information and advice to help get you started. Stop in to the Wellness Center today to talk to a mentor about becoming a better you.

The Women's Tennis Team
The College of St. Scholastica's Wellness Center is also the main area to catch many athletic teams holding practices. I'm going to let you know about the awesome women's tennis team so that you all can come out and cheer them on.
The team has only three seniors (Lindsey Shoden, Jess Rich, Heidi Johnson), and one junior (Casey Ruberto), which allows the remaining nine players room to improve and strengthen their skills. They will be able to use the knowledge of the seniors and junior in order to become even more successful in coming years.
Wells Patten is also the coach for the women's tennis team and has a lot of experience from his coaching days over at University of Minnesota-Duluth. While coaching at UMD, he led them to their first NSIC conference championship. He has proven himself a leader and we can only look for more success this year.
So, how is the team doing? Well, they have only won one complete match up and have given great effort in the four losses. Each loss has been close and I'm sure as the season progresses, we can see the W's continue to increase. In the last match up, Jess Rich and Paula Beckerman both won their singles matches, while two of the three doubles teams won their matches. However, with the wins they were barely defeated 4-3 in the match play.
The women won't be back at the Wellness Center until after spring break. They will be playing Bemidji State and Bethany Lutheran on March 24. So there is no excuse to not cheer on the women's tennis team this year. So I hope to see you all working out or cheering for one of the great athletic programs we have at the Wellness Center, and don't forget to check back soon for more updates.

Men's Tennis
Hello again everyone. I am going to tell you a little about men’s tennis team that plays in the Wellness Center here at St. Scholastica. The tennis season has already started, so I will get you caught up, and give you some information on the team.
This year the men’s tennis team consists of two seniors, four juniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen. This year’s freshmen are Dillon Sterle from Hibbing, Minnesota, and Nemanja Radosevic from Serbia. These two freshmen should make a great addition to the team and compliment the returning players well.
The team is led by head coach Wills Patten. This will be coach Patten’s tenth season as the Saint’s head coach. Coach Patten was a tennis champion in both singles and doubles during his college career. He is a professional tennis instructor and boasts a master’s degree in Athletic Administration. Coach Patten is actively involved in tennis throughout Minnesota, and the college is proud to have a Duluth, Minnesota native as their head tennis coach.
Last season, the team’s overall record was 12-14, but the team boasted a 8-0 record in conference play. So far this season the team boasts only two wins along with six losses. The team is hoping to gain some wins on their trip to Orlando, Florida over spring break. The team recently defeated Ripon College in Houghton, Michigan. Many Saints got their first wins in this game including Derek Johnson, Ryan Anthony, Scott Hawley, Namanja Radosevic, Peter Sparby, and Alex Rogers.
If you are interested in watching the team play, the next home game is on March 24th against Bethany Lutheran College here to face the Saints. You can check out their schedule by checking the St. Scholastica web site at www.css.edu.
Be sure to stop by and watch the men’s tennis team in the Wellness Center this season before or after working out, or just for something to do on a Saturday morning. Hope to see you there!
